Odyssey House Journals

HIS RECOVERY IS NOTHING SHORT OF A MIRACLE
When Michael Hodges was 8 years old his mom said she was taking him to Disneyland. Instead she dropped him off at a Hell’s Angels cub where his dad was and he started using meth and alcohol at that tender, young age. Now in his 50’s Michael has finally found recovery. In this edition of Odyssey House Journals he talks about his long, winding and almost unbelievable journey. ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY HELPING ADDICTS TO RECOVER
It’s not magic, but Recovery Dharma seems to be working as an alternative path for people seeking recovery from their addiction. Steve Slater facilitates 3 Recovery Dharma meetings each week at USARA in Salt Lake. It helped him to find recovery from his alcohol addiction. The amazing thing is that it is so simple. In this edition of Odyssey House Journals he describes what happens at each meeting and how it works. I HATED ODYSSEY HOUSE WHEN I FIRST GOT HERE
But he stuck it out and now he’s sober, happy and running his own trucking company. Trevor Petersen spent time in prison after his addiction to meth and heroin and he’s now loved by the recovery community because he’s a good man. He has tattoos over most of his body including his head. In this edition of Odyssey House Journals we asked him if that creates a stigma about who he really is. “P&P”- PARTY (METH) AND PLAY (SEX) IN THE GAY COMMUNITY
“It’s an epidemic that no one wants to talk about because of guilt and shame.” says Frankie Chavez who is going through Odyssey House for the 5th time. He grew up with gender issues which he says was difficult because of his Catholic and Hispanic culture. He got caught up in the “P&P” lifestyle and says he was actually addicted the first time he used meth. WHAT DO POLICE REALLY THINK ABOUT DRUG ADDICTS?
“We care and we know that people aren’t the drugs that control them. We try to see beyond that and get them help.” Two men in the Orem Police Department, Dave Hallam & Glenn Giles, are working hard to erase that “us versus them” mentality on the streets, and it’s working! In this edition of Odyssey House Journals find out what they’re doing and thinking, and why. Watch or listen and hopefully subscribe (free) to the 30 minute podcast on the following platforms:

MEET THE MAN WHO STARTED UTAH’S MAGIC MUSHROOM CHURCH
He grew up LDS and was a conservative Republican state legislator for 16 years. Steve Urquhart is perhaps the most unlikely person to start The Divine Assembly Church which uses psychedelic mushrooms as a sacrament. He claims he found inner peace and the mushrooms helped him deal with past trauma. In this edition of Odyssey House Journals we asked him if magic mushrooms could be used to treat addiction. PAIN PILLS TO HEROIN AND IN 3 MONTHS SHE LOST EVERYTHING
“I had nothing left,” says Sommer Ogzewalla who lost her job, her house, and most importantly her 3 kids. She even spent 72 days in jail because no one would post her $100 bail. Now, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, she has a home, her children, and one of the most trusted jobs at Odyssey House. In this edition of Odyssey House Journals hear the amazing story of how, with hard work, she turned things around.
